Maya Selway

Silversmith / London

I make unique, contemplative, precious metal vessels and jewellery. My current collection includes beautiful hand-made bowls, plates, vases and jewellery produced using sustainably sourced metals.

I am influenced by the impermanent nature of the objects that surround us and by the cycles of change that these objects go through. Integral to this is the Japanese philosophy of Wabi-Sabi that acknowledges that; nothing lasts, nothing is finished, and nothing is perfect.

In translating this influence into my own work I find the free-hand sprinkling of gold and silver dust or enamel becomes a subtle decorative effect and the beautiful random patterns created through fusing gold and silver dust become ethereal spectral objects that frame empty space and suggest solid form.

Maya trained in Silversmithing at Camberwell before moving on to complete a silversmithing residency at Bishopsland.

Maya Selway was one of six shortlisted artists in the National Sculpture Prize 2010, created by the Bluecoat Display Centre.
