Michael Brennand-Wood / Thursday 2nd January 2020 - Friday 31st January 2020
This display ties in with our January exhibition, focusing on the successes of our outreach programme. Michael worked alongside stroke patients and NHS staff at Broadgreen Hospital in October 2019, teaching them various making techniques. The patients gained new skills and enjoyed the benefits which hands on making can have including reduction of stress, increased dexterity and social interaction as part of the art group sessions.
This exhibition shows a range of Michael’s own work. Michael works in particular with, embroidery, pattern, lace and recently floral imagery in the form of wall pieces and also brooch accessories. The works are colourful, dramatic, rhythmic and possess intense detail. He explores and develops techniques, inventing many new and imaginative ways of integrating textiles with other media. His recent work, inspired by traditions of floral imagery has incorporated computerized machine embroidery, acrylic paint, wood, glass and collage.
“I have explored the space between two and three dimensions. A defining characteristic of my work has been a sustained commitment to the conceptual synthesis of contemporary and historical sources, in particular the exploration of three-dimensional line, structure and pattern. The most innovative contemporary textiles emanate from an assured understanding of both textile technique and history.”
